Irritable Bowel Syndrome (lBS)

IBS is the most common gastrointestinal tract disorder, and it encompasses a wide umbrella of digestive system complaints that have a strong link to the nervous system.

IBS occurs when the normal rhythmic muscular contractions of the digestive tract become irregular causing spasms, which interfere with food digestion and waste elimination. Poor elimination of metabolic waste can cause a build-up of toxins and mucous within the digestive tract, which can partially obstruct the bowel, trapping gas and faecal matter. This, in turn, can lead to gas, bloating, abdominal distension, nausea, constipation, or diarrhoea.

Stress (physical and emotional) plays a significant role in lBS, and may be connected to the severity and frequency of symptoms. Physical stress is generally dietarily related and may be associated with a low-fibre diet, poor hydration, or the ingestion of foods to which one may have a sensitivity or allergy. The foods that commonly cause problems are gluten, genetically modified wheat, and dairy. Emotional stress can include anxiety, fatigue, hostility, and depression.

The treatment regime for lBS focuses on removing allergy-forming foods from the diet, and increasing dietary fibre, enzyme-rich foods, and water intake. In addition to these dietary changes, supplementation that focuses on calming the nervous system, restoring healthy peristaltic motion, and improving elimination is also important.

Furthermore, it is essential to develop effective stress management techniques that will not only improve symptoms but also influence the body’s overall health and well-being.

There are a number of products that may be beneficial for managing lBS. AIM Composure contains relaxant herbs that support the nervous system and help to restore smooth peristaltic motion. AIM’s BarleLife is a whole food that is high in valuable nutrients that assist healing, nervous system function, and bowel elimination.
