A specially prepared carrot soup – the so-called Moro’s carrot soup – is an old and very effective home remedy for diarrhea. In a short time it helps both adults and children as well as dogs and cats!
Stop diarrhea with Moro’s carrot soup!
Moro’s carrot soup can stop diarrhea. The special thing about the soup is that it is cooked for a long time, during which substances are formed – so-called oligogalacturonic acids – which are not present in the raw carrot, but are extremely effective at inhibiting the bacteria that cause diarrhea.
It doesn’t matter the cause of diarrhea, e.g.it is also often an excellent remedy for diarrhea that occurs as part of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Professor Moro: inventor of Moro’s carrot soup
The soup was named after the Austrian pediatrician Professor Dr. Ernst Moro (1874-1951), who created it in 1908 as a home remedy for diarrhea, drastically reducing the mortality and complication rates in children from diarrheal diseases. At the time, this was worthy of a Nobel Prize, since 95 percent of the high infant mortality rate in homes was the result of diarrhea. There were no antibiotics back then.
Professor Moro first practiced at the children’s clinics in Munich and Heidelberg, later – up to three years before his death – in his own practice in Heidelberg.
How exactly does Moro’s carrot soup work against diarrhea?
Professor Josef Peter Guggenbichler, from the University Children’s Hospital in Erlangen, was able to demonstrate in a study in 1983 that soup can prevent the bacteria that cause diarrhea from adhering to the intestinal wall ( 1 ).
After a further study in 2002, he wrote in the Vienna Medical Weekly Journal that oligogalacturonic acids resemble the receptors of the intestinal epithelium and that pathogenic intestinal bacteria such as E. coli bacteria or salmonella bind to themselves so that they can no longer attach themselves to the intestinal wall ( 2 ).
In fact, a concentration of just 0.005 percent oligogalacturonic acids is sufficient to completely block the bacteria, which can now be easily excreted in the stool.
Carrot soup works better than glucose-electrolyte solutions
Clinical studies have also shown that the use of aqueous carrot preparations in acute gastrointestinal infections in children is superior to the balanced glucose‐electrolyte solution.
You could make such a solution yourself for diarrhea: Take a liter of still mineral water (or boiled cold tap water) and mix it with a teaspoon of table salt and seven to eight teaspoons of glucose (alternatively table sugar), of which a total of two liters should be drunk throughout the day.
The solution quickly gives the body back the minerals it needs, but the composition is not ideal because, among other things, there is a lack of potassium, which is why one should use electrolyte solutions, especially for children.
But even this does not contain much more than sodium chloride, glucose, and potassium, while Moro’s carrot soup provides many more in addition to these three nutrients, namely the entire spectrum of minerals and trace elements of the carrot (especially calcium and iron) and the heat-resistant vitamins.
Moro’s carrot soup: The original recipe
It is recommended to take the soup several times a day on an empty stomach for a few days right at the onset of diarrhea. It is crucial that the carrots are boiled long enough because only then the active substances release. The soup is prepared as follows:
Ingredients
- 500 g peeled and chopped carrots
- 1 liter of water (add some more water later)
- 3 grams of salt
Preparation
- Boil the carrots in water for at least 1 hour, other sources write at least 1.5 hours.
- Then press the soup through a sieve or puree it in a blender or with an immersion blender.
- Fill the soup back up to a liter with boiled water and add 3 grams of salt.
Can you add other foods to Moro’s carrot soup?
You can also improve the taste of the original recipe, e.g. grate some fresh ginger or half an apple and add to the finished soup. For dogs and cats, chopped chicken can be added in the last half hour of the cooking time so that the soup is readily accepted. For small children, the soup should only be prepared from the three main ingredients.
Can you eat something else when you have diarrhea?
The soup is considered more of a remedy than food. This means that the patient if he has an appetite (!), can also eat the normal diet for diarrhea (grated apple, mashed banana, toast (without anything), mashed potatoes (just made of potatoes, water, salt), rice soup with zucchini, gruel or similar).
How is Moro’s carrot soup taken and dosed?
Moro’s carrot soup is taken in small amounts several times a day in addition to a light diet, e.g. every hour two to four tablespoons or every two hours a small bowl – whereby the amount is of course adapted to the age and weight of the patient. In cats, the frequent intake of 1 to 2 teaspoons of the soup is already effective.
Patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease report that eating a small plate of Moro’s carrot soup half an hour before each meal every day is very helpful in keeping their disease under control and preventing a new flare-up.
Why does carrot soup work better than antibiotics?
For a long time, the healing soup was considered the standard medication for diarrhea, but from the 1940’s it lost importance due to the use of antibiotics and the typical diarrhea medication.
Carrot soup has the decisive advantage over antibiotics in that it neither leads to the development of resistance nor attacks the intestinal flora and is also free of harmful side effects.
Even patients with an intestinal infection – triggered by the notorious EHEC bacteria (enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli) – can benefit from Moro’s carrot soup, as was also read in the medical newspaper on June 8th, 2011, where it is also recommended to take Moro’s carrot soup several times a day right at the beginning of bloody diarrhea to be taken over a few days (3).
Antibiotics, on the other hand, do not make much sense in the case of an EHEC infection, even from a conventional medical point of view, since this delays the excretion of the bacteria and can even worsen the course of the disease due to the increased formation of toxins.
Of course, there are other home remedies that can be used for diarrhea, preferably in combination with Moro’s carrot soup, such as: adsorbing mineral earth (zeolite, bentonite, or healing earth), activated carbon, dried blueberries (simmer 2 tablespoons in 250 ml water for about 10 minutes) etc. Also, avoid foods that can increase diarrhea or irritate the intestines.
